FAQs

  • How much previous experience do I need? It helps to have a good understanding of the style you wish to qualify in, whether you have danced it previously or are currently dancing.

  • What should I do first? The IDTA Associate is the first level of the Association’s professional dance teaching qualifications. It prepares candidates to teach their chosen dance genre and can be completed as a full examination or in modules over time.

  • How long does it take to become qualified? This depends on your previous experience and the time you can commit. We usually hold professional exam sessions once a quarter, and exams may be taken in modules or as a complete exam, depending on the style and qualification level.

  • How many lessons are required? This depends on your experience and how much independent study you can complete. We recommend either 30 minutes each week or one hour every fortnight.

  • What does the exam involve? The Associate is a practical examination conducted by an IDTA-appointed examiner. Candidates demonstrate the relevant dance genre to music and answer technical questions.

  • What happens once I have passed my qualification? After passing your first teaching qualification, you will be eligible to become a professional member of the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA), which requires an annual subscription.

  • What benefits does IDTA membership provide? IDTA membership enables you to enter students for examinations in your qualified subject and take them to IDTA Nationwide Competition Qualifiers. Professional members are also invited to lecture days, conferences, AGMs and other events. Depending on your qualification level, you may also apply for adjudicator licences and examiner examinations.
